A client wrote me a really sweet and encouraging note. Thank you, Raven, for being so kind and supportive! xx
Hello folks, I can't believe that I have not been blogging for more than a month! *gasp* Thanks to Facebook's mobile app, it has been really easy to share on the go via FB. I regularly post my new works and happenings there, so please check out and support TSA's fanpage at www.facebook.com/thestyleatelier if you haven't! :)
October has been particularly eventful (and yes! crazy busy as well...); I was privileged to be able to style various ladies for their weddings or pre-wed shoots. As every woman is unique, it is always a challenge for me to craft a look that best expresses a bride's beauty and individuality. But this is also what makes my job fun and worthwhile- to help people discover beauty in them and inspire them to become who they are meant to be.
Here are some hair and makeup looks which I have crafted lately. Which is your favourite?
There is so much more to share but I will leave it for another post. Let me know which style you love; feedback is always welcomed. Take care folks for now and see you at this space soon!
Lianhe Wanbao ran an article on celebrity lifestyle blogger Holly Jean (www.hollyjean.sg) this week with a picture which Hongyin (from www.littlemissrabbit.com) photographed and I styled Holly for.

More ladies participated in my Effective Skills For Personal Makeup Course, and this is what they have accomplished for themselves by the end of the session. :)
As seen from above, Cher Fern learned to apply eyelid stickers to transform her eyelids from single to double as well as to conceal the appearance of stickers using other makeup products. The purpose is to create bigger, brighter looking eyes but still look natural. She also learned to choose the right eyelid sticker (based on its texture, thickness and length) and trim it appropriately to suit her eyes.
Priscilla (left) has very limited experience with makeup. Besides learning how to create her own makeup look, I also taught her how to choose and buy the right foundation shade/ product for herself. I looked through her makeup kit as well to rid products which may be unsuitable for her skin/ features. As she does not usually wear makeup and prefers a fuss-free routine, I customised a makeup look which is easy, light and natural-looking.
This is what Priscilla has to share:
"I have always considered myself to be someone who is not naturally at ease with applying makeup. However Joy is able to breakdown the entire process into easy to follow steps and instructions... My husband and colleagues have also complimented that I look prettier with my new look :) With her soothing yet cheerful personality, Joy made the makeup lesson both an educational and fun experience, which I thoroughly enjoyed."
Thank you ladies for your support! I look forward to helping more ladies with makeup. If you would like to part of this, feel free to email email@example.com for details. Hear from you soon! :)
"The truth is, no one knows how to apply cosmetics instinctively. Inadvertently, many girls have also been mislead into thinking that other girls simply do and therefore do not dare break this surface tension of being none the wiser. We have bought into the myth that upon purchasing the latest product from the counter, we will be able to expertly wield it.
Unfortunately, it does not work that way many a times and my own trial and error was not getting me the results promised by the advertised product.
Deciding to debunk this mythical expectation that girls just know how to apply makeup, I consulted the The Style Atelier for a one-to-one session at the Effectiveness in Personal Makeup Workshop. I never looked back since.
Joy of The Style Atelier first and foremost got to know more about my skin type, my preferred look and what I wanted to achieve in a personal profile prior to the workshop. Because everyone is unique, Joy does not paint in broad strokes, but instead calibrates for each person's hue the most appropriate shade of cosmetic. She also considers my lifestyle, work environment and wardrobe when recommending the best look for me.
Joy addressed the area that I was most clueless about, which is the purpose and application of the primer, the foundation (liquid? compact? powder?), BB Cream (what's BB?) and the like in creating that naturally flawless base. She assuaged my reservations and provided the scaffold for me to gain confidence with hands-on practice.
The session was very detailed and for me it was the golden opportunity to find out everything I always wanted to know about make-up but was too afraid to ask.
By the end of the session, I was much better armed with a deeper knowledge of make-up (deconstruction and blended back together) and a new found confidence in being able to create the look and feel that's just right for me.
PS: One of the sweetest testimonials I have ever received from a recent participant of my Effective Skills For Personal Makeup Course. Thank you Wynnie for your kind words. I sincerely appreciate the support! :)
My dear bride Natasha sends me her kind encouragement after the wedding. Thank you Natasha for your generous support; this really brightens up my day! :)
Thank you so much for making my wedding day so beautiful. I really appreciated the way you took my suggestions and wishes into consideration. You were so patient with me, and I particularly liked the way you addressed all my queries. Everyone loved the make-up, and they loved the hair even more. I will be sure to recommend you if anyone I know is looking for a make-up artist."

"I can't think of a better person than Joy to have styled me for my wedding. She is truly a professional - capable, highly skilled, and with exquisite attention to detail. I really appreciate the fact that Joy uses top-quality products, and that she has a wide knowledge of hair and makeup trends and techniques that she is always willing to share. Joy also made me feel very comfortable - involving me in the entire process, collaborating with me on my tastes, and engaging me in discussions about what she was doing. She's also a pleasure to be with; she is warm, interesting, and a great listener. She's skilled at a range of styles - from subtle and romantic, to high fashion and daring. Joy also possesses the most important quality of any stylist: she is truly gifted and passionate about what she does, and she loves making people beautiful and happy! "

Two ladies came to my home studio for training in Effectiveness in Personal Makeup Course and we had so much fun! :)
Here are their testimonials:
"Here's the deal: I'm clueless when it comes to make-up, and I'm already 33! Although I like to keep things natural, I'd also like more options for that special day/night out. That's why I signed up for a class with Joy, and it was a blast! She was full of energy, funny, encouraging, and more important -- she understood what it was that I needed. I've never had the confidence to play around with make-up in my whole life, but I'm think I'm ready to have some fun with it now!" -Evelyn Tan-Rogers
"An excellent course that covers the essentials of enhancing your looks. A stranger commented on how 'gorgeous and unique' I looked an hour after walking out of the course where I learned to apply my own make up to create the look I wanted from start to finish. Definitely helps you to create an impression! Thanks Joy!"- Grace Martin
"My company engaged Ms Joy Tan as our makeup trainer for a makeup workshop we held... My workshop participants enjoyed her session immensely, and were impressed by both her professionalism and her vast makeup knowledge. She was a patient and friendly instructor who made participants feel at ease in her class. Her teaching of makeup technique was clear and engaging, peppered with useful advice on how to adapt the makeup skills learnt to suit individual facial features. This made the group session feel very personalized, and ensured that all participants walked away with new knowledge that they could apply to suit their needs and preferences. All who attended the workshop were filled with praise for Ms Joy Tan’s knowledge and approachability. We will definitely asking her back as trainer for our future makeup workshops!"
